2021 ICD-10 Effective October 1 September 22, 2020

The 2021 edition of ICD-10 contains over 500 diagnosis coding changes.  The updates will become effective in just 9 days, on October 1st, 2020.  The changes include: 490 new codes, 47 revised codes and 58 codes deleted codes.  The 2021 manual includes new instructions for reporting manifestations of COVID-19, as well as new guidance on social determinants of health, insulin use and acute kidney failure, among several other changes. The revisions largely impact the following chapters within ICD-10: 

  • Chapter 13: Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System and Connective Tissue
  • Chapter 19: Injury, Poisoning and Certain Other Consequences of External Causes for Adverse Effects 
  • Chapter 20: External Causes of Morbidity
