OIG Hospital Compliance Review Report

The OIG recently published a new report outlining their findings from yet another hospital compliance review.  The OIG has been conducting onsite hospital compliance reviews based on a variety of data analysis techniques which are designed to identify hospital providers with a high likelihood of non-compliance.  The findings of the compliance reviews are published on the OIG website.  The most recent report included overpayment findings related to the following areas:

  • Insufficient documentation and incorrect billing of inpatient rehabilitation services
  • Incorrect inpatient coding and DRG assignment
  • Incorrect reporting of hospital acquired conditions
  • Incorrect reporting of present on admission indicators

The OIG determined the errors found in this review occurred primarily because the hospital had inadequate billing controls.  This OIG report, and others like it, provide insight into common problem areas and are a valuable resource to consider when developing your own compliance work plan.

The most recent report can be located at https://oig.hhs.gov/oas/reports/region5/51700026.pdf
