ICD-10 Delay

ICD-10 Delay April 1, 2014

On March 31, 2014, the U.S. Senate passed H.R. 4302, Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014. The final vote was 64-35. This House Resolution, among other things, delays the implementation of ICD-10 for at least one year. HR 4302 also prohibits RACs from conducting post-payment reviews of patient status under the  “2-midnight” rule until March 2015. Additionally, the bill further delays the Sustainable Growth Rate which was set to go into effect April 1st. This will prevent a payment reduction to physicians that was scheduled to go into effect tomorrow. The bill is being sent to President Obama to sign into law.

Providers are strongly encouraged to take maximum advantage of the implementation delay. This is an opportunity to focus on extensive training for providers and coders, refine processes and policies in regards to the “2-midnight” rule, and to better prepare for the future deadline.
