The implementation of ICD-10 is only 18 months away. Transitioning to the expanded code set can be smooth and successful, but the planning phase should already be under way. Planning, Communication, and Testing Phases, Level 1:
- Clear understanding of the impact of ICD-10, identification of resources, and access to updated publications and tools with new regulation changes
- Establishment of a project timeline including ICD-10 project team and plan, communication plan, project budget, and risk management plan
- Identification of all trading partners including vendors, payers, and clearinghouses, along with the associated transactions
- Monitoring of vendor and payer preparation activities
- Establishment of communication with staff, vendors, payers
- Assessment of vendor’s test plan and timeline
- Analysis of required database, system, and hardware changes
- Evaluation of staffing and training needs, including high-level training for test team
- Reviewing, updating, and developing new standard operating procedures, procedural manuals, and workflows
- Creation of new or updating of current business requirements

The adoption of ICD-10 will impact providers, payers, clearinghouses, and billing services who are covered by Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA). All services provided after the October 1, 2014 compliance deadline will not be paid if billed with the ICD-9 code set.
